The stars of The Summer I Turned Pretty discuss the impactful mic drop kiss: ‘It’s quite significant’

Attention: This piece contains vital information about a specific episode of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and may spoil the plot for some readers. In episode 7, titled “Love Affair,” Belly, portrayed by Lola Tung, ultimately chooses between the two Fisher brothers, and her choice doesn’t remain a secret for long. The episode revolves around Belly seeking solace in Jeremiah, played by Gavin Casalegno, after her mother, portrayed by Jackie Chung, slaps her following a wild house party. It is during this emotional moment that Belly realizes Jeremiah has always been there for her, prompting her to let go of any remaining feelings she had for Conrad, portrayed by Christopher Briney. Jeremiah, however, insists that there will always be a connection between Belly and his older brother. While trying to determine where her heart truly lies, Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad spend the night together, helping Conrad prepare for his final exam. They embark on a road trip to ensure Conrad arrives on time for the exam, leading to a romantic day for Belly and Jeremiah at Finch College. This eventually leads to an intense make-out session, but their timing couldn’t have been worse, as Conrad finishes his final and catches them in the act. The situation becomes incredibly awkward. Despite Conrad’s devastation, Tung, in an interview with EW, emphasizes how important it was for Belly and Jeremiah to have a heart-to-heart conversation about their relationship and the changes that have occurred since they were reunited. She points out that Belly attempted to have a serious discussion about her relationship with Conrad earlier in the episode but misunderstood his sleeping state. Tung believes Belly feels safer and more understood in her relationship with Jeremiah due to better communication. Casalegno recalls reading the final scene of the episode during the table read and being awestruck by how it concludes. He describes his reaction as a “mic drop” moment and expresses how thrilling it was to film. On the other hand, Briney, who plays Conrad, is appreciative of how this development transforms the central love triangle and sees it as monumental for the season’s storyline. He explains that it was challenging to approach this scene as an actor, as there were several possible reactions for his character, but ultimately Conrad reverts to old patterns. Please note that these interviews were conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, and the second season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” is currently airing new episodes on Prime Video every Friday.
